We survived the interesting
events of the Baltimore show, ate plenty of great Chesapeake Bay seafood, and
made new friends. Steve has been busy replenishing our inventory with
visually stunning and historically interesting items. If there is
something in particular that you are looking for, let us know. We'll be
happy to help.

This past April marked the 150th Anniversary of the
beginning of the Civil War. We have a variety of Civil War items including
some of the finest recruiting posters in private hands, as well as
letters and artifacts.
Heavy Artillery
is among the most spectacular Civil War recruiting posters. By
the end of 1862 the North had secured key coastal ports and cities in North
Carolina. It was important for the Union to keep these cities and ports from
falling back into Rebel hands, as they were a key to Southern shipping. As part
of that effort, in the Spring and Summer of 1863 men were recruited for the 2nd
Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery for guard and garrison duty in
various locations in eastern North Carolina. The occupation resulted in large
loss of life to the regiment- ironically, not so much by battle as in illness.
In May 1864, a yellow fever epidemic struck the city of New Berne and the
surrounding vicinity and took a heavy toll on the regiment with a large number
of its men succumbing to the disease.
This is the actual broadside used during that recruiting drive back in 1863. It
is impressive both for its massive size and large 12" x 29" black ink area
drawing of a Civil War artillery crew manning a field piece which has just been
fired. Surrounding the gun are five-uniformed artillerymen, four soldiers and
one officer, with each figure approximately 10" tall. The sheer size of this
graphic, combined with the numerous bold, printed headings appearing in the
lower portion of the broadside, convey a message of power and strength to those
so fortunate to be part of a heavy artillery battery. The remaining message is
even more clear. "DRAFTED MEN RECEIVE NO BOUNTY". In other words, wait to get
drafted and you will forfeit up to $652, which was equal to four years pay.
